Anterior Hip

The knees and hips are the two biggest joints in the human body. When they’re not working correctly, mobility and quality of life become limited. Meet the award-winning Lowcountry Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine doctors specializing exclusively in hips and knees. With support from their talented team of physician assistants, nurses and physical therapists, doctors Richard Zimlich, Eric Stem and Neal Huang are trusted surgeons who work with each patient to determine the best course of treatment and help them return to a pain-free lifestyle.

Meet Dr. Zimlich

For more than 25 years, Dr. Richard Zimlich has performed hip and knee replacements for patients at Lowcountry Orthopaedics. As a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, the Notre Dame undergrad and University of Louisville School of Medicine grad specializes in joint replacements, including partial and total replacement, revisions of existing joint replacements, resurfacing and cartilage restoration. He is also trained to use the Mako robotic arm for partial and total knee replacement surgeries.

Craig Story, a patient of Dr. Zimlich’s who had both knees replaced within the same year, trusted him to regain mobility after several years of knee pain. “Lowcountry Orthopaedics is world-class. To me, it’s a great experience. I don’t sit here in pain; I’m pain-free.”

When he’s not operating on patients, Dr. Zimlich enjoys golfing and spending time on the water with his family.

Meet Dr. Stem

Dr. Eric Stem has been with Lowcountry Orthopaedics for over 15 years. Previously, the University of North Carolina grad spent years in occupational medicine and emergency medicine, served in the U.S. Army Reserves and as a flight surgeon for the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Stem is an expert in total joint replacement, revision of the total joint, hip and knee disorders, arthroscopic surgery and 3D printed joint implants. He finds joy in helping his patients find the right treatment and successfully getting them back on their feet.

“I told him about my journey, how long I had been struggling, all the ups and downs that I had been through,” explained Dr. Stem’s patient Barbara. “How I knew that I had found the right person was because I could see the hurt and the pain in his eyes to see what I was going through.”

Meet Dr. Huang

A fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement surgeon, Dr. Neal Huang joined Lowcountry Orthopaedics in 2024 and brings a bevy of experience working beside leaders in the field. His medical specialty focuses on rapid recovery through minimally invasive procedures like the ‘bikini’ anterior hip replacement technique that minimizes scarring, and the kinematic total knee replacement he personally tailors.

With his patients’ comfort and pain levels driving him, he works with patients to determine the non-operative or surgical solution that is best for the patient. Dr. Huang is currently accepting new patient appointments at our North Charleston, Charleston and Summerville locations.
