Joel R. Cox, M.D., founding partner of Lowcountry Orthopaedic Associates, is a native South Carolinian, having spent his early years in the Upstate/Piedmont area. He received his education at The Citadel and The Medical College of South Carolina, now MUSC. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Navy, first with a rotating Internship at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois, then with an Orthopaedic Residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. During his residency he served rotations at the Joseph Kernans Hospital in Baltimore, MD, and at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA. Upon completion of his residency, he returned to the lowcountry as a physician on the Orthopaedic staff at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Charleston, S.C. Upon discharge from the military in 1975, he established his private practice, now Lowcountry Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Cox and his wife, Lena, have made their home and raised their family in Summerville. They have been active in many local organizations and have participated in many community efforts. The family has enjoyed participating in many of the athletic activities offered by the vibrant Summerville community. Dr. Cox particularly enjoys the opportunities offered for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and enjoying the wildlife and wonders of nature. He especially enjoyed sharing this with their children as they were growing, and now with their six grandchildren.
As a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in foot and ankle treatment/surgery, Dr. Cox has dedicated his professional career to enabling others to more fully enjoy their lives in this beautiful area. He is a diplomate in the American Academy of Foot and Ankle Surgery. As with all physicians at Lowcountry Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, he sees and treats patients with other Orthopaedic problems.
We have now grown to 3 offices, including our Ambulatory Surgery Center in the Oakbrook area of Summerville, our downtown office in Summerville and our main office on Tricom Street in North Charleston, serving patients primarily from Dorchester, Berkeley, Colleton, and Charleston Counties. We are happy to see patients from areas beyond the region.
